CBSM Sermon Video – “Best Book Ever: What’s it really all about?”

This was the first sermon in our doctrine of Scripture series: “BEST BOOK EVER.” Since we just finished up our “Man On The Island” series that journeyed us through the “Doctrine of General Revelation”, “Best Book Ever” is our trip through the “Doctrine of Special Revelation and Scripture.” And that my friend, is an overdose of quotation marks! Through this series, my prayer is that CBSM will be convinced, passionate, convicted, and strengthened in the Christ-centeredness, Authority, Inspiration, Inerrancy, Infallibility, and Sufficiency of Scripture. And not that they would just understand these things theologically, but that they would also live them daily!

The Christocentric hermeneutic continues!  Remember that Christocentric means “Christ-centered” and hermeneutic means “view or interpretation of Scripture.”  This lesson is extremely important on how to preach Christ in every sermon and from every Biblical text.  I believe these are the keys to a truly powerful sermon that changes lives!

Should we point to Christ in every sermon?  From what we learned in the last lesson…absolutely!  Usually we hear most in our churches about the will and the glory of God – and Jesus is both of them (Eph 1:9-11, Phil 2:9-11).  We also saw that all of Scripture is ultimately pointing us to the person and the work of Christ – His identity and His accomplishment – Who He is and What He has done, is doing, and will do forever.  Preaching is calling people to become like the person of Christ by trusting in His work!   Continue reading

(This was a special Wednesday night we set aside, we gave our students options, and they chose to hear about how we go about setting up all of our sermons and why we do what we do every Wednesday night.  I get very detailed in the mp3, and I think it would serve as the best example of what we do and why we do it every Wednesday night for our Storyline student worship service.)

We recently finished studying the Pentateuch in our student ministry. Those first five books of the Bible were written by one author, Moses, who covered over 2,500 years of Biblical history. In John 5, Jesus told a group of Jews that it was obvious that they didn’t believe in God the Father or the Scriptures because they didn’t believe in Him (5:37-44). But then Jesus seemed to take it a step deeper by telling them that they don’t even believe in Moses whom their hope is set on because they don’t believe that Moses wrote about Him (5:45-47). Hold the phone. Moses never mentioned the name of Jesus in his writings. Where and how can we find Jesus Christ in the Penteteuch? Continue reading

KTL 2009 #2: Teaching Teens to Preach Christ – The Purpose of Preaching

02 – KTL – The Purpose of Preaching (mp3)

When it comes to teaching teens how to preach and teach the Word, they have to first understand the whole goal of the Word. So many people feel like they can’t possibly remember every sermon they hear from week to week at church. Others think that sermons are just different topics of self-help every week from their pastor as a counselor. So, we must first of all focus students onto the focus of the Word: the glory of Christ.
