CBSM Iron Bowl IV: Alabama vs. Auburn Night

There are two kinds of people in Alabama. One kind says says Roll Tide, and the other says War Eagle…and nothing else matters around here when it comes to college football. The last 3 National Championships, 2 of the last 3 Heisman Trophy winners, and 3 of the last SEC Championships have come from either Alabama or Auburn. Needless to say, we aint playin when it comes to college football, yall!

Alabama and Auburn meet up and show down every year in what is called, the Iron Bowl. Every year we like to have our own CBSM Iron Bowl to see who has the best fans in the student ministry. Here’s how we compete:
1. Who brings the most fans to their side (teams sit on opposite sides and even coerce other fans like UT, UGA, and others to their side).
2. Who has the craziest fans. We will play their team’s fight song, and the team that goes the nuttiest wins.
3. Which team’s fans are dressed up the best?
4. Which team has the best dressed fan?
5. Which team member can do the best touchdown dance?
6. Who has the best quarterback? Continue reading

Sermon Intro Video: The Book of Lamentations

Here is Andrew England’s creation of a sermon series intro video on the book of Lamentations. Lamentations is all about hope within disaster and devastation. It “just so happens” that God had it planned for us to study the book of Lamentations on our first Wednesday back from the fierce tornadoes that hit Alabama on April 27, 2011. So the video has tons of footage, stats, and information about the tornado damage on that unforgettable day.

Denae’s Tornado Testimony: Disaster to Hope

This is a testimony of one of our CBSM teens who went through the tragic EF-5 tornado on April 27, 2011 in Harvest, AL. Here, she tells her story of how she lost her home and her dad. Her hope in Christ is unbelievable!

CRISIS COUNSELING: School Shooting in Madison

It has been a day filled with emotion, hurt, fear, drama, anxiety, worry, and chaos. The world of safety and security has been toppled upside-down for so many middle schoolers in the Madison, AL area. I heard from our secretary around 2pm today that the shooting had occurred at Discovery Middle. My phone started blowin-up with calls and text messages from concerned parents and students. Another youth pastor in the area called me and said he could get us into the schools (which were on lockdown) to minister to the kids. We went out there, got on campus, past the perimeter police, but then they wouldn’t let us in the doors.

We had several students from our church in the school during the time of the shooting.  A student was in the same hallway as the shooting, a student had just left the hallway right before the shooting, and several others were still in the building.  Some of our students knew the victim.  Some of our students knew the shooter.  One had lunch with him.  One had a class with him.  To say the least from this huge tragedy, our students are dealing with fear, anxiety, hurt, sadness, worry, vulnerability, doubt, and confusion.  A youth pastor’s question is always, “How do we counsel them?”

1.  Whenever I counsel a student, I always make sure to listen.  Continue reading
