All Out – 1 – Singing – Exodus 15 (curriculum)

This sermon kicks off our brand spanking new serious called ALL OUT which is all about worship through the last half of the book of Exodus. This story is incredible as it tells how the Israelites broke out into an immediate, natural, and spontaneous worship service right after they passed through the Red Sea. They couldn’t help but sing and worship God for what He had just done in their lives! In the same way, believers are natural singers. For those who have experienced the saving grace of God, we naturally sing His praises. We can’t help it! This message helped our student ministry worship Jesus more emotionally, passionately, and loudly in incredible ways!

Disciple Making in Student Ministry (Leader Training)

Disciple Making in Student Ministry.001

Here is my latest talk on Disciple Making. This talk came from a Leadership Training session with my own leaders on a Sunday morning. Here are a few thoughts from this training:

Disciple Making should be so simple that any disciple is able to make more disciples.

Jesus gave us a very simple but clear strategy to Make Disciples.

We must start a multiplication movement of Making Disciples because what the church has been doing for years is not working.

The WIN is student ministry should be Disciple Making Multiplication not attendance.

Straight Outta Egypt: Leadership (Exodus 2-6)

Straight Outta Egypt is our series moving through the first part of Exodus. This message was on learning about leadership through the book of Moses. Although Moses was not a model leader in the beginning, we do learn about our call to lead through His call to lead from God. Here are some quotes from our sermon that are very important for students to live.

Everyone is looking for a leader.

Leadership is simply following Jesus and bringing others with you.

Jesus is our Better Moses.

Jesus is not your Savior if you don’t follow Him as your Leader.

Sermon Writing Template

youthpastorpreaching

Every Youth Pastor,

I wanted to pass along to my weekly sermon writing template that I personally created. This helps me not to start from a blank slate, but to think creatively within categories that will ultimately develop a Gospel-centered sermon for my students from God’s Word. I pray this is as helpful for you as it has been for me.

Feel free to download it, change it up, and make it your own.

(You will see some names that I’ve listened to for years. I’ve listened to some for theology and some for communication. If they are in my template, I do not necessarily endorse their theology or ministry.)

So Many Emojis: God, are you trying to hurt me? (Genesis 32)

Jacob is a man in the Bible that we can all connect with. His life was filled with constant wrestling. He kept trying to get ahead, be successful, and become a someone, but his life was exhausting. That is, until the night everything changed when God came to wrestle him man to man. Jacob’s life went from wrestling against God to resting in God. He went from a life of wrestling to a life of blessing. This message will show you how to do the same.

So Many Emojis – 2 – Isaac – Genesis 22 (keynote)

We call this series “So Many Emojis: Riding the Relational Roller Coaster” because a relationship with God can be a crazy ride filled with many different emotions! Take Isaac’s life for instance when God called for his death by his own father. What are we even supposed to do with that? But God called for this sacrifice in order to bring a bigger blessing! Check out to see what all this means, how it applies to the Gospel, and what it means for our lives.

How to Take Your Students Deep without Drowning Them

wavepool2

One of my favorite trips I ever took with my family while growing up was a weekend to Six Flags and White Water in Atlanta, GA. One year, my parents let my sister and I both bring a friend on this annual weekend of adventure. I chose from my group of friends very wisely because I wanted to make sure to have the most fun possible. So, I picked my buddy, Brandon. But before my decision was final, I had one last interview question for him: “Can you swim?” I asked because I didn’t want Brandon slowing me down! I had big plans for White Water’s slides, diving pool, but especially the wave pool. Brandon’s answers was, “Like a fish.”

I will never forget jumping into the deep end of the wave pool as soon as we got to White Water. Brandon jumped in right after me. I watched him sink “like a rock” to the bottom…where he stayed. Life guards began blowing whistles, they shut the waves down, and a fleet jumped into save my fish-less friend.

“Like a wave pool, if you shove your students into the deep end too quickly, they will drown!”

Throwback: How to get the most from your Old Testament Devotions (Genesis 4 – 11)

Throwback – 4 – Humanity – Genesis 4-11

Throwback – 4 – OT Devos – Genesis 4-11 (keynote)

I believe its not only important to preach/teach Biblically and Gospel-centeredly, but its also important to preach/teach strategically. For example, we just started releasing passages for daily devotions to our students. This sermon in our Genesis series not only teaches them Genesis 4-11, but it also strategically teaches students how to get the most out of their Old Testament devotions.

Throwback: Reverse the Curse (Genesis 3)

Throwback – 3 – Curse – Genesis 3 (slides)

The best way to resist sin is to know Satan’s strategy for sin. Genesis 3 is the best chapter in the entire Bible to let us in on Satan’s secret strategy for sin. The sermon will show your students how sin is far more serious than they even realize. Feel free to download these resources and make them your own.
