Its all about one day! The question is: will it be a bad day or a good day for you? This one day is the most important day in your whole existence. I’m talking from the day you were born until the rest of your eternal life…this is the most important day ever. What day is that? Its the day that the book of Joel is about. He calls it “The Day of the Lord.” You need to read and hear about this book to see how to turn this terrifying day into the best day you could ever imagine!

How do we know when the Holy Spirit is working?

I LOVE IT when students truly reflect on preaching.  This is a question I got from one of our students who was reflecting on our pastor’s sermon this Sunday.

“Hey,
I thought of a question from last night about the sermon. How do you know when the Holy Spirit is leading? Okay He prompts you, how do you know the prompts are not from yourself or from Satan? I hope I said it right. :-)”

Ah!  Awesome question.  I love the humility, the faith, and the desire to know biblical answers.  Here was my answer. Continue reading

Before we move forward, lets review exactly what these spiritual gifts are. What good will it do us if we move forward while forgetting what we’ve learned so far? Lesson 1 – Spiritual gifts include our passions, abilities, personality, and experiences that were once used for Satan’s kingdom. Jesus Christ our King has plundered that evil kingdom, rescued our gifts, and now we can use them for His kingdom! Lesson 2 – God has recorded many spiritual gifts in His Word, but not all of them are found there. He just gave us an idea to understand what they are and what some of them are. Our spiritual gifts can include many different abilities that Jesus has given us to use for His glory in the church. Looking at our spiritual SHAPE is very helpful. Now moving on… Continue reading

One question I love to get students thinking about is “What kind of spouse do you want to live with for the rest of your life?” I want them to go ahead and think of those real important qualities that truly matter as that will affect both who and how they date. If you’re a student reading this, go ahead and do that now… In the same way, God has qualities and characteristics. They are what we call His attributes. Who do you imagine God to be? Do you know what God is REALLY like? God wants us to know Him! Continue reading

Seminary and Student Ministry (part 6): the importance of teaching on the SPIRIT

Paper: How does Acts teach about the Holy Spirit?

When we talk about the Holy Ghost, we scare little children.  When we talk about the Holy Spirit, we excite teenagers.  So many people look at the Holy Spirit as either a spiritual energy drink Who’s going to make them feel the energy of Jesus, or more like a spiritual shot Who’s going to make them lose all control.  Have you ever thought any of these questions to yourself: Continue reading

“What’d you get me, daddy?” I can remember excitedly asking that question to my dad whenever he’d return from a business trip. Being the brilliant man he is, he’d bring me home all the swag (stuff we all get) that the vendors would hand out for free like the highlighter triangle, the bouncy balls, and of course the oversized pencil. When I came back from a mission trip to Africa, I did something very similar. Being the awesome-cool Uncle that I am, I brought back my niece and nephews African musical instruments. This seems to be deeply embedded into our culture reaching back to the times when kings would take their armies to battle another nation. The victorious king would plunder the other nations goods by bringing back the spoils from war and handing them out to the citizens of his kingdom so that they could be used for their good. I remember feeling so helpless and powerless.  When I was 18 and working at a golf course in Tuscaloosa, the regular morning drill was getting paired off to go out on the golf carts and accomplish the daily golf course duties.  On one morning, I was paired up with Matt, who was a devout and practicing Roman Catholic able to explain his faith very well.  After hearing his spiel, I was perplexed.  How could I ever put my faith in “the gospel of Jesus Christ alone” into words in such a way that would convince him to believe my way over his?  But that was the problem.  I was only thinking of it as trying to explain my faith rather than explaining THE faith!

Framework #9 – MACRO Theology – Doctrine of the Spirit

Files for my fellow student pastors…

Who is the Holy Spirit?  What is the Holy Spirit’s primary role in the universe?  Has the Holy Spirit always existed?  How are we supposed to relate to the Holy Spirit as Christians?  Let’s begin with some true-false questions, and then we’ll answer them in the lesson.

Before we get into all that, let’s first understand who the Holy Spirit is not.

  1. When referring to the Holy Spirit, we should say “It” because that’s what the Bible says.
  2. The Holy Spirit won’t be in eternity since we won’t be sinners and Jesus will be ruling.
  3. The Holy Spirit’s primary role is to point the world to God the Son, Jesus Christ. Continue reading
