Quextions: Q&A Text Messags from Nehemiah 3-7 (Persecuted for Christ?)

Quexts are when our students text in their questions from the sermon in our last worship service.  So this video is my humble attempt to answer their questions.  Here are the questions:

Why am I being persecuted for my faith?

Are there other students being persecuted for their faith, too?

What all kinds of types of persecution are there?

What is my source of strength to stay strong when I’m being persecuted for Jesus?

What am I supposed to do when I’m being persecuted?

What should i start reading if I’m not reading my Bible yet?   Continue reading

Facebooking for Christ

At CBSM, we’re all about using the modern technology to spread the gospel of Christ and publicize His glory!

Over Christmas I met with good friend and church growth guru, Dean Inserra, who is the pastor of The Well in Tallahassee…you’ll see his web address below.  CBSM students, you’ll know Dean Inserra from our “Know Your Role” DNow with him a couple of years ago!  This is the most important thing I learned from him in our pow-wow, so I wanted to pass it along.  It’s good…real good…even better than the Triple Prime Burger I had at Ruby Tuesdays with him.  Here’s what he said…

We do a facebook add (very cheap) that appears on every person in the Florida State, Tallahassee Community College, and overall Tallahassee networks fb page.

We also take advantage of what people are already doing. People feel the need to update their “status” every hour, and then comment on what their friends just wrote. So, we do a mass blitz several times a year where it literally “blows up,” on the news feed. You could have up to 200 of your friends write thewelltallahassee.com as their status at the same time. It is nuts.   Continue reading

HarvestFEST (Revival) 2009: A Look Back

Free resource for youth pastors: Zach Gryder Evangelistic Sermon (mp3)

Yeah, so this blog is pretty stankin late since our HarvestFEST revival was back in October 2009.  I’m finally just getting/taking a little time to look back at it.

HarvestFEST is our “revival” of the year.  We use it to strategically invite the lost, unbelieving, unsaved, and unchurched to our church to hear the gospel.  I hate admitting this, but I used to think this kind of thing was epically lame. Now I know I had just never been a part of such an amazing style of revival before.

What made the revival so great was the speaker that we had.  We brought in RONNIE HILL, a seriously hilarious comedian who is full of integrity and a love for Jesus Christ.  He really sticks to the basics with a simple gospel presentation and very engaging illustrations.  I used to think revival preachers needed to go way deeper, but he really was perfect to reach the lost at the point they were at and bring them to Jesus.   Continue reading

Have you ever gotten that haunting feeling that you forgot something that you needed, or worse yet…you left something on (like the oven) that could burn the house down?  That happened to me when I was in college.  I remember driving home with that nauseous feeling, but trying to wipe it out of my mind like every other time.  But this time, I rounded the corner to my apartment and saw 3 fire trucks outside, lights spinning, spot lights exposing my apartment, and hoses out.  I raced inside to see the damage I caused from leaving on the oven, but nothing in our place was harmed.  Everything was fine.  It was a dryer fire from the apartment beneath us.  Whew!

When we look at the book of Nehemiah, we have to remember that its setting is within a major disaster.  Continue reading

4 Things You Need To Do for the New Year

If you don’t have enough to do, enough football to watch, and enough new year’s resolutions…I’m giving you four more:

 1.  Text me your name and number so that I can put you on our CBSM text list (for CBSM students and guests).  You can get my number any time from me or any of your CBSM friends.  You can also tell your friends to text me and get on our list as well.  I send out texts a few times a week just updating you on our services, our events, etc.

 2.  Join our CBSM Facebook page.  Just type in CBSM and look for the logo that is to the left of this blog article.  We’d love for you to join and keep up with us on facebook.

 3.  Subscribe to our blog.  If you look on the right hand column of this blog, you will see an option to subscribe by putting in your email.  No junk mail will come to you, but every time we post something new, you will be notified of it in your email.

 4.  Subscribe to our iTunes podcast.  The very first post on our blog gives you a link to subscribe to our sermon podcast there.  We’re working diligently on getting our iTunes podcasts up to date right now.  We have too many podcasts to show them all on iTunes.  That should be fixed sometime soon.  Also, we should be kicking off a video podcast of our sermons on iTunes this spring. Ezra and Christmas Stage-Set

I just had to show off and brag on our stage-set for Ezra and Christmas through the month of December.  Like boasting in Christ for our righteousness, I can brag about our set because I pretty much have very little to do with it.  I can never take any credit.  Our media dude, Andrew, comes up with the design.  Our set design team (led by awesome adults (Dave and Amanda) constructs our set as much as they can on Sunday nights from 5 – 6pm.  Then Andrew and I will usually finish everything up that they weren’t able to get to.

CBSM Ski Trip 2009 Recap

We just got back from our annual CBSM Ski Trip, so I just wanted to quickly think back through it for those of you who might be interested…or reminisce with me if you went!

We shoved off with 62 people filling our charter bus and 15 packer van at about 8am on Monday morning.  On the ride up, God was really working in my heart concerning what to preach on for the trip’s worship services.  Two years ago, I had spoken on loving each other.  Last year, I had a guest speaker go on the trip with us.  I was thinking through speaking on things like 1 John, 1 Peter, 2 Peter, Fellowship, Philippians 3, etc.  God settled my heart on fellowship because of how much He used our ski trips in the past to develop deep fellowship between our students.  I’ve seen students grow closer together, students get connected into our student ministry, and students become an active participant at CBSM through our ski trips in the past.   Continue reading
