This Wednesday: Fireworks at the Fowlers

fireworksatfowlersAight, so yall know I don’t like to do this stuff toooo often.  I think the best way to reach your friends for Christ is to bring them to a regular Wednesday night worship service so that they see Jesus in action by our lives of worship.  But this Wednesday, we just can’t help ourselves!  Our worship service will start at 6pm this Wednesday only.  After the worship service, we’ll head over to the Fowler’s house for some food (a cookout) and some fireworks (provided by you).  This is a great opportunity to bring your friends, for them to be a part of our Wednesday night worship service, and for them to get to know us in a more informal way at the Fowler’s.  The goal: to have a great time together and introduce them to Jesus!  So you need to bring all your friends, some fireworks, some food (either a 2 liter, a dessert, or some chips), and a lawnchair to sit back and enjoy the show.  We’ll get done at the Fowlers around 10pm on Wednesday night.  Last year we had almost 100…let’s defiitely work hard to get over that hundred hump.  See yall there.

VBX 2009: Boomerang Express – It All Comes Back To Jesus!

Our church just got done with one phenomenal week of Vacation Bible School: Boomerang Express from Lifeway.  I must say: I was very impressed and somewhat shocked when I saw that the motto for the VBS week was “It All Comes Back to Jesus.”  The main lesson that I learned in seminary was how all the Scripture, God is calling us to be Christ-centered.  All of the Old Testament is pointing forward to the person and work of Christ while all of the New Testament is proclaiming the person and work of Christ.  So it was crazy cool to be able to teach that this week to our kids.

I was in charge of the VBX week which was specifically for all the students going into the 6th and 7th grade this fall.  This is the age group that is usally the least attended for VBS’s.  Because that seems to be the case, we have done absolutely everything possible to step-it-up for the tween-agers, seriously hype it, and show them that they are never too cool for Christ.  So in this blog post I’m going to give you the schedule of what we did every day…and how we did it.  And by the way, our VBX usually makes up for about a fourth of the entire VBS attenders, the students LOVE it, and they keep coming back! Email from a not-so-skeptic student…anymore!

After a Wednesday worship service, a newer visiting student came up to me and told me how much he had loved visiting our student ministry over the past few weeks.  He told me he wanted to write me an email about what was going on in his life.  Read this.  I was blown away.  Please be praying for him as God continues to work in his life to bring him closer to salvation in Jesus Christ!  I just wanted to share this with you.

“Alright, heres whats goin on

Pretty much church has never made a whole lot of sence to me, I never understood what was going on, I only went when I was younger cause my mom took me.  When I got old enough to start making my own decisions I stopped going, that was like 10 or 11.  Few years after that I got into high school and started talking to people who not only didnt believe but dis-believed.  I started doing the same thing, shooting down the bible and making excuses wherever I could.  Well I started having a rough time at school and just in general close to the end of this school year.  I started seeing a councilor about it and I had been talking to samantha recently around school.  My councilor said I needed to get outa the house and do something with friends.  So I asked [my friend] if I could come to church with her, and of course she said yes.  So I showed up Wednesday night and I had a lot of fun and it really spoke to me, more so then I had ever felt it.  So I’v been returning and really enjoying myself.  The Bible has never made sense to me until now, I’m actually interested in reading it.  I’m just having a hard time believing in everything after dis-believing for so long.  I’m also attempting not to get attached to capshaw baptist because I’m leaving come fall, so I’m kinda stuck in a limbo sort of thing, not sure if I should move forward or not.  I realize how important it is to accept Jesus and to know God, and I want to do both.  I just need some guidance on what I need to do and how to go about it.
Sorry for the long e-mail, and thank you so much for taking your time to read over it.
Looking forward to your opinion”

Do you have a good luck charm?  Some baseball players sleep with their bat in their bed, some football players get trainers to smack them across the face to pump them up before a game, and some hockey players dip their stick in a toilet to teach it respect.  1 Samuel 4 – 7 is all about a story when the nation of Israel had reduced God down to their own cute little good luck charm.  So be thinking, “Do you use God as your own personal good luck charm?”  Let’s take a good look at this passage and our lives. Romans 12:1-2 “How’s Your Worship?: Spiritual Worship with our Physical Bodies”

Romans 12.1-2 (mp3)

Romans 12.1-2 (sermon notes)

Last night we had a sweet college worship service.  One of our high school graduates (’08) Jeremy Coburn brought in the praise band that he’s a part of: “Selfless Praise.”  They rocked the house with some intense worship songs that focused our hearts onto Christ.

Between their two worship sets, I had the opportunity to address our college students.  The reason we had this event was to welcome in our new college ministry members who had just graduated from high school.  So I wanted to speak from a passage that would introduce to them our purpose as a college ministry and challenge them to live lives of worship.  So I landed on a really interesting passage that is very popular, but its also very misunderstood from my angle.  So feel free to check out the mp3 and read the notes on Romans 12:1-2 “How’s Your Worship?: Spiritual Worship with our Physical Bodies.”

“Kingdom” is a word that everyone gets and wants if they know it or not.  When I was around 7, my cousin and I would hangout a lot to set up our G.I. Joes like a kingdom battle.  In the next room, my sister would set up her Barbies like a peaceful kingdom-home.  All kids freak out when they get to experience the Magic Kingdom at Disneyworld.  Even elderly people love to join a kingdom-like retirement village with their own chariot-golf carts, dwell in their own castle-apartments, etc.  A kingdom is a place were people life live together ruled by a king.  Our culture and we as humans seem to both understand and desire a kingdom, but why?  Everyone sets-up their own kind of kingdom.  Why?  It’s because God created us for an eternal and powerful kingdom.

Leading up to the book of 1 Samuel, God is moving Israel into the kingdom phase of their history. Continue reading

The issue of God’s sovereignty can always be so confusing in premarital relationships.  Are singles supposed to sit back and wait on God to bring along the right person, or are we supposed to find them ourselves?  It can get real tricky late in the relationship when you’re trying to figure out if God wants you married or if you’ve made everything happen yourself.  Nevertheless, we desperately depend on His control!
