The Shack: a theologically twisted view of the Trinity

shackI’ve honestly been meaning to write this blog forever now. I went through this book a couple of months ago, and wrote down several notes on it, so it has remained very fresh. The reason I read the book is because it has taken both the country and the Christians by storm! I’ve had fellow youth pastors rave about the book, teenagers ask about it, and church members inquire concerning it as well. Previously, all I had done was listen to other pastors comment on it. Pastor Mark Driscoll (youtube search line: mark driscoll on the shack) did an amazing seven minute blurb on the book. I’m sure I’ll sound a little like him in this article. But I decided to go through it myself. In fact, if you’re wondering my thoughts on whether or not you should read it…I would say definitely don’t. The book is so clever and well written, I’m not sure if I even picked out all of the heresy because of how engaging it is. But what heresy I did pick out, it was gross enough to give me a life long mission to steer everyone away from the book. Here are my thoughts:

First of all, the main comment I hear about The Shack is, “I understand the Trinity so much better now.” To that my answer is always, “No, you understand William P. Young’s view of the Trinity better now.” The biblical theology of this book is…atrocious, horrendous, and downright freaks me out if people are falling for it and don’t know any better. Here are some examples… Continue reading

How do we know when the Holy Spirit is working?

I LOVE IT when students truly reflect on preaching.  This is a question I got from one of our students who was reflecting on our pastor’s sermon this Sunday.

“Hey,
I thought of a question from last night about the sermon. How do you know when the Holy Spirit is leading? Okay He prompts you, how do you know the prompts are not from yourself or from Satan? I hope I said it right. :-)

Ah!  Awesome question.  I love the humility, the faith, and the desire to know biblical answers.  Here was my answer. Continue reading

Joshua: Intro Video

I love watching pastors like Mark Driscoll (marshillchurch.org) and Craig Groeschell (lifechurch.tv).  Driscoll’s preaching is crazy theological solid steel, and Craig’s creativity in his sermons are phenomenal.  Driscoll is also very creative and Craig is also decently theological.  One thing I’m noticing that they are both doing is sermon intro videos.  So we decided to give it a shot this series as we’re going through Joshua.  We were thinking of a background video and song that would wet the teen’s whistle (in other words – make them salivate and drool) when thinking about this eternal promised land – the new earth.  So here’s what we came up with.

Storyline #37: Joshua 12-22 “The Land of the Living”

3-joshuaintro1Free files for youth pastors:

3 – Joshua 12-22 – Land of the Living (ppt)

3 – Joshua 12-22 – Land of the Living (mp3)

3 – Joshua 12-22 – Land of the Living (fillout sheet)

3 – Joshua 12-22 – Land of the Living (order of service)

3 – Joshua 12-22 – Land of the Living (outline)

3 – Joshua 12-22 – Land of the Living (powerpoint game)

If you want to be wowed and blown away, watch the video called “Did You Know” on you tube. That freaking awesome video is all about how life, culture, and technology is changing our lives…and our world. It has even changed a ton in my life. I can remember having to walk to the TV to change the channel and getting our first VCR. I can remember when computers weren’t showing images in color, just the font and background could be in color. I can remember watching my first video on the computer and being amazed by this spinning can of jolt! I can remember playing pong on our first video game system – Texas Instruments, and not being able to sleep several nights before getting the Sega Genesis because it had 16 bits! I can remember having a “bag cell phone”, getting my first text message, and how my friends thought I was weird because I carried my cell phone to class. The times have changed, are changing, and will more!

In Joshua 12 – 22, the times are definitely changing for the Israelites. Their quality of life, technology, and culture is about to skyrocket as they are entering their land of living and rest. Continue reading
