Today was a huge answer to prayer! Before I began my day, I prayed and asked God for the discipline to get many things done today…especially in the realm of studying. I needed to study the whole book of Joshua as we are going to kick that new series off in a couple of weeks…and God totally gave me the grace to get that done! Joshua will be a four week series, but I’m still trying to decide if I want to point the series to spiritual warfare (with the conquest) or eternity (with entering the promise land). I believe both would be faithful to the Scriptures and the fulfillment of them through Christ! Continue reading

When It Rains…It Pours: Sickness, Surgeries, and Death
Monday and Tuesday, I spent over 20 hours either in the hospital or en route to the hospital. On Monday, one of my student’s dad was having brain sugery…his second. This time they went in to drain a baseball size cyst. The procedure went great. On Tuesday, one of my teenagers had surgery to remove a foot and a half long bar out of his chest. He went home the next day. Yesterday I spent an hour with a family in my church who just lost their dad (and grandfather). All three of these families mean the world to me as they all truly seek after Christ, are passionate about His church, and they all have taken great care of me since I’ve been here. Continue reading

The Christocentric hermeneutic continues! Remember that Christocentric means “Christ-centered” and hermeneutic means “view or interpretation of Scripture.” This lesson is extremely important on how to preach Christ in every sermon and from every Biblical text. I believe these are the keys to a truly powerful sermon that changes lives! Continue reading
POSTGAME: reflecting the superbowl party
Just wanted to share a few thoughts about our superbowl party. Last year we had 2 venues for our superbowl party. The middle schoolers were at one house (the family is still recovering from that) and the high schoolers were at another house (that house is still being renovated). We did it because we wanted our students to enjoy chillin out together at a casa with their friends…and to have a homey environment to bring their unchurched friends to. Continue reading
KTL 2009 #2: Teaching Teens to Preach Christ – The Purpose of Preaching

02 – KTL – The Purpose of Preaching (mp3)
When it comes to teaching teens how to preach and teach the Word, they have to first understand the whole goal of the Word. So many people feel like they can’t possibly remember every sermon they hear from week to week at church. Others think that sermons are just different topics of self-help every week from their pastor as a counselor. So, we must first of all focus students onto the focus of the Word: the glory of Christ. Have you ever been in a witnessing situation when you just weren’t sure what to say? I’m talking about a time when you were growing and learning so much about Christ that at times you might get excited and say too much to an unbeliever who wasn’t quite ready to hear it all. Have you ever felt at other times that you should have said way more? Situations like those are exactly the reason why we’re studying the book of Deuteronomy. You are in these situations and conversations every single day. Every day your conversations could and should give you a way to talk to others about Jesus and everything surrounding salvation in Him. My goal through Deuteronomy is that you understand the gospel better, and that you are better trained to share it with everyone. Continue reading
